NM Senate pro tem suggests Texas redistricting tactics
NM Senate pro tem suggests Texas redistricting tactics

Last Update: 08/07/2003 10:53:36 AM
By: Associated Press

(Albuquerque-AP) -- State Senate President Pro Tem Richard Romero has asked his fellow Democratic lawmakers to seriously consider congressional redistricting.

He made his request in a letter that was sent out last week.

Romero says revamping New Mexico’s congressional districts would be good for Democrats. Republicans currently hold two of New Mexico’s three seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Romero asks whether Democrats should adopt the same tactics being used by Republicans in Texas. Eleven Democratic state senators from Texas have fled to Albuquerque in a boycott over a GOP congressional redistricting effort in Texas. (snip/...)

2. True, we have to stand up to them......but NOT by redistricting........
Edited on Thu Aug-07-03 12:13 PM by DagmarK
That would legitimize the tactic........

The No. 1 argument against redistricting is that it's unlawful to do it at a whim......... We sure shouldn't add to an illegal precedence.

the 2nd argument goes toward HOW they are re-drawing the lines...

4. As we all know Dagmar
It matters not whether it is legitimate or not just as it matters not if you cower before a bully. It only gives them entertainment prior to punching.

These monsters created their own Party Sub-Media in order to "create" their own legitimacy.

Logical arguments hold no weight with monsters, Freepers, and assorted Brownshirt Totalitarian Fucks.

(but I repeat myself...)

5. In politics today, only winning counts

It is sad to accept, but losers have little power in politics and winners have all the power.

6. There are reasons WHY there are rules and procedures
governing political processes like redistricting...to prevent just the sort of thing the Republicans are trying. What makes them think that if they try it that we shouldn't be able to as well? Sorry, but if they don't like it they shouldn't do it.

8. I agree.
We need to show America that the left has better values. With the glare of constant media, this kind of stuff is being seen in real time, and bad behavior is very recognizable to most folks....I really think we're going to see the "Bush Backlash" in 2004....bad karma is a bitch.

America has a conscience....and when he spoke to us today, Al Gore told us to throw the bums out.

9. America lost it's credibility...
after December 12, 2000 which is the day that the Supreme Court SELECTED Texas Governor George W. Bush to
be the pResident of the United States.

As soon as he got into office he decided that America will do as it desires reguardless of what it's allies thought.
He has shown no respect to the world. If you want to live in this world Georgie then you've got to play by the rules.
He opposed the Kyoto Treaty, he has selectivly supported free trade as long as it helped his special interests!
We started a pre-emptive illegal war against a sovereign nation that had posed no threat to us. Now we are recalling a Democratically Elected Governor and the process has turned into a circus!!! America's respectibility has been ruined!

7. I like this idea. It illustates how bullshit the republican tactics are.
The Texas attempt at redistricting is just another example of the republican party's policy of stealing whatever they are unable to win at the ballot box. Other examples are the republican impeachment of Bill Clinton, Florida in 2000, and the California recall. There will be many more. If redistricting is proposed in other states, people (or the Courts) might demand a stop to all of it, including Texas.

Those who object on the basis of it being "against the rules" should consider that the republicans have changed the rules and will continue to change the rules unless they are stopped.

11. Would NM GOPers flee to Texas?
Maybe NM and TX could have a legislative exchange program, complete with an "adopt a State Senator for a session" kind of thing.
