WASHINGTON, Aug 7 (Reuters) - This week's car bomb in Indonesia was the latest reminder that the "war on terrorism" cannot be won like a traditional military campaign and will require a lengthy global effort, U.S. analysts said.

And the scourge of such attacks may never be finally stamped out, they said.

"We regard war as a finite undertaking," said Brian Jenkins, a senior terrorism expert at the RAND think tank.

"For our opponents in this, war is ... a permanent condition," he said. "Even when there is no fighting going on, the concept of war is perpetual."

2. I can't believe that our admin. cannot connect the dots

between Islam and the perpetuity of this war, yet it's pundits have no problem expressing the same sentiments that are driving this war, as in Coulter's "kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity". An admin made up of Christians who sing "Onward Christian Soldiers" at church can't understand the concept of a religious and cultural war. When are they going to GET IT.

3. Religous and cutural war?

I truly feel theres more too it than that, but neither here nor there for this topic. If your curious though to what I mean, examine the foundations of Islam in regards to Imperialism in that region, and furthermore, the positive correlation in all societal contexts for resistance groups to form when a social contract is being neglected by the rich few--then apply that on a macro level to the world in terms of Islamic terrorism. Then ask...who's the badguy?

If this perpeptual war ever wound down and "we won", then I equate that to killing the symptons of the flu, but leaving the virus in the body to wreak more terror later. Another movement will form on a macro scale, endlessly. This enless war will only stop if the proponents of this Global class warfare examined the cost-efficiency of waging war compared to renegotiating the social agreemetns with third world countries.

Its too easy though telling yourself its a culture and religion thing. It labels them as crazies and takes away personal responsibilty...it basically doesn't answer the question of where they came from and why they attacked, because irrationality as a motive is suggested.

5. I'm actually more of an equal opportunity offender.

I label religious extremists on both sides of the issue "crazies", as you put it. As I understand it, the U.S is pretty much responsible for the Islamic fundamentalist revolution, beginning with our actions in the 1950's continuing through the 1970's.Just as we are responsible for the chaos in Liberia thanks to Reagan giving 400,000 million to folks who overthrew the gov't there in 1984, which ended 150 years of peace and democracy in Liberia.

Who can explain the current religious fanaticism of the U.S government? This is a first world country, it can't be explained by poverty and deprivation. Proponents of global class warfare, also known as war-profiteers, DO NOT CARE. Period. The Bushes and Cheneys and bin Ladens (oil family, not Osama) could care less about whom they hurt, as long as it doesn't happen in their front yard.

It is not lost on me that both sides of the issue use religion as an end to justify their means. I believe it is religious predjudice and disrespect of this admin that is one reason we are in this quagmire, because they seem to have been operating on the assumption that eastern societies actually WANT to adopt western ways, the "they hate us for our freedoms" tripe, and this admin seems stunned that this has turned out to be a fallacy.

Your statement that someone saying that religion and culture are involved is tantamount to labeling a whole culture as "crazies" is a bit of a leap and was a misstatement of my intentions in the post. I apologize for not making this clear. However, with regards to terrorism, the ends cannot be said to justify the means, and frankly, Islamic fundamentalist attitudes toward women, especially use of doctrines to justify genital infibulation, honor killings, and domestic violence, not to mention the denial of civil rights for women ARE unpalatable to women in the west, and no amount of sympathy and understanding with regards to the origins of terrorism will change that for this western woman.
