KAMLOOPS, B.C. - As crews struggle to contain three major forest fires in the British Columbia Interior, lightning is starting new ones.
The B.C. Forest Service said Thursday that lighting had sparked 200 new fires in the previous 24 hours.
More than 1,700 lightning strikes were reported since midnight.
Meanwhile, the McLure/Barriere fire north of Kamloops now covers about 166 square kilometres and is active on two fronts.
It continues to threaten the town of Barriere, and has caused authorities to airlift about 200 people out of harm's way. They were mostly located in remote fishing camps.
