India cans Coke, Pepsi

New Delhi - In a chain reaction across India, students, politicians and even some restaurants have decided to ban Coke and Pepsi - at least for now, it was reported on Friday.

Several state governments - Kerala, Andhra Pradesh (south), Maharastra, Gujarat (west), Uttar Pradesh, Delhi (north) and West Bengal (east) - said they would conduct random tests on soft drink samples and threatened to close bottling plants if pesticides were detected.

In a damning report, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) - a leading Indian non-government organisation - said Coke and Pepsi soft drinks in India contained pesticides.

actually produced in India. I mean they are not bottled in the US and shipped to India. If Coke and Pepsi actually do contain high levels of pesticides it is more likely it was caused by some disgruntled worker in India. Perhaps the whole situation is being fabricated in order to kill the competition.Just food for thought.

I consulted there for a while. A few weeks after giving me all sorts of free juice, jelly, etc, and praising the work I did for them, they raised a large stink and blamed me for overbilling. They were about the cheapest folks I've ever worked for.

They did not want to pay for the extra hours I had to put in to do the job right.

Typical post-nickle-diming from cheap customers.

I'll never drink their grapes again.

Coca Cola Company, under attack for containing pesticides in its bottled drinks, has more problems in its hand. It is now accused of contributing to the production of 'poisoned fruits' and thereby causing a lot of miscarriages among pregnant women in a Kerala village.

According to Kerala's Perumadi panchayat president A Krishnan, the company has not been disposing off its toxic wastes properly. "Instead they are selling it off as manure to our farmers!"

"The Kerala Pollution Control Board has confirmed that the wastes have cadmium and lead content well above the permissible limit. This can cause cancer, kidney failure and delivery problems among women if it enters into the food chain," says Green Peace activist Ameer Shahul.

The company has already disposed off 5000 tons of toxic waste as manure to farmers in the area....

which is in abundance in that region. Much healthier and cheap anyway. Dont forget colas are a luxury to most of the people in that region.

India has opened up it's market to foreign products just a couple of years ago, which has given a huge boost to its economy.

IIRC, their domestic brand was Kampa Cola, even worse than the real stuff.

Problem with the fresh juices recommended in this thread are hygienic conditions. Foreigners travelling there should better stick to bottled drinks - or to the delicious indian tea.

some twenty years ago travelling India.

But I had to go through one really shitty week, before my body became accustomed to Indian germs. As well, I switched my whole diet to Indian food and regularily used some herbs and fruits for protection Indian friends had recommended to me.

An acquaintance of mine died due to some unknown infection in India.

Been in India for three months in the last two years, drinking fresh juices all the time and never had any problem whatsoever.
