Move U.N. to Toronto: Canadian MP

OTTAWA, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- A Canadian member of parliament says the United Nations should move from New York to Toronto, a report said Friday.

He wants a quarter of the land to be offered for a new U.N. headquarters. A $15-million monorail could be built by Canadian rain maker Bombardier to link the facilities with Toronto's downtown core, he said.

The U.N. headquarters is one of New York's prime tourist attractions, but the U.N.'s top manager has said the buildings are a safety hazard in need of billions of dollars in repairs. The United Nations has approached the United States for a $1.3-billion loan to cover some of the costs.

3. Talk about a blow to prestige

I would be really sad if this happened. Though our stewardship has been very very spotty. This one act could send the U.S. into a complete isolation/war mongering role. Especially since Castro would be able to go to the UN whenever he wanted without U.S. approval.

No, not becuase I'm a repub, and there's a fight between the UN and the White House right now.

No, I'm sick of their hipocracy. They claim they are for 'international peace' but only get involved when the US gets involved. They screwed up eastern Europe so badly it's sad. And dont tell me it was all the US's fault, or such. we're talking about the UN>

It is sick how they criticize us over and over and over again, but yet what do they DO? They only DO something after we've taken the lead. Clinton had to do everything to either: 1. clean up their mess or 2. take the lead becuase all they do is sit around and bitch.

13. Only get involved when the US gets involved

Uhm, could that be because the US has veto power and the UN is often stymied without US backing?

I just posted an article where the US has decided to make decisions about which Iraqi public services to privatize, in direct opposition to the promise that Iraq would decide. Just like the US has encouraged foreign countries to privatize things like water leaving millions of people around the world unable to afford water and forced to drink from unsafe rivers and ground sources. That's the sort of thing that makes it hard for the UN to operate, the US has its own views of how things are supposed to be... for the corporations that is.

15. UN failures...

Well, I'm not here to razz you, but here's my take.

You want the UN to put its money where its mouth is.

That's not exactly easy when the UN is beholden to the Security Council, which the US dominates. Take the last two wars. The US got up to endless arm-twisting and bribery to secure favorable votes--everybody on that Council understands that it's vote with the US, or pay the price in other areas, like trade.

You also dislike the fact that the UN member nations "criticize us over and over and over again."

If they make that much noise, they must be telling us something. In any case, what skin is it off your back or mine if small nations say they don't like the way they're treated by the US federal government or our giant corporations? It's not as if you personally meddle in the affairs of those nations. Neither do I. They're criticizing our plutocrats, who do meddle, and have a long history of viciously meddling.

Those nations may be right or wrong depending on the case, but if we want to have alllies and get along in the world, we'll have to try to listen.

The U.S has bullied around the U.N. So how can they do their job correctly! Maybe some reform at the U.N is needed such as ridding it of Permanent members with a VETO!

9. UN and US

The United States (thanks to the pugs of course) doesn't even pay its dues to the UN. The US totally ignored the UN (again the pugs) when it came time to be sensible and continue inspections in Iraq. Many Americans saw this as weakening the UN; I saw it as a further expression of our arrogant attitude toward the world (pugs especially.) US citizens know so little about the rest of the world and do not care to learn. What this says about us is embarrassing; the President is about the equivalent of many Americans: mentally they are indolent, but think they know everything they need to know.

If New York lost the UN we would be in a pickle.
The site is not only a widely loved tourist attraction it is a symbol for Americans to embrace and participate in the International community.

I for sure would rather the UN stay in the states than Toronto (even though I like that city as well). The US better shell out the change to keep the UN there, Bush has already done enough wrong to them.
