U.S. buying Russian rifles for new Iraqi police, army
Washington-AP -- How's this for international cooperation in Iraq? The American occupation authority is buying Russian A-K-47s for the Iraqi army and police forces.

Officials in Washington say they'll buy 34-thousand of the rifles. The new firearms will be added to thousands of similar weapons that were seized in raids since the war started in March.

1. These rifles will end up being sold on the black market
like the weapons we supplied to the ARVN. They'll eventually be used to kill our own soldiers.

2. Exactly!
The market has to be replenished after the weapons caches that have been uncovered recently.

It is insolence piled upon folly to equip these men with weaponry compatible with that already in the hands of those attacking U.S. soldiery, and in circulation in the country at large. It is probably being done because the recruits are already familiar with such arms, and so will require less training time, but that is a very shortsighted economy: far better to equip them with U.S. issue equipment, or with something completely off-brand.
