Locals 'apprehensive' about G-8 Summit

Some 5,000 of the posters were distributed, urging everyone to keep cool during the June 8-10 gathering hosted by President Bush. One shows a hand clutching a brick with the words "Don't break, build."

"People are apprehensive," said Dian Brownfield, president of Savannah's Downtown Neighborhood Association. "I don't think many people are worried about their own homes. They think about the city as a whole. It's a national treasure."

But Esther Shaver, who owns a book store near one of the summit hotels, said meetings with police have persuaded her to stay open unless there's trouble.

"I'm a hard person to intimidate to begin with," Shaver said with a laugh. "I'm hoping they'll give a riot and no one will come."
