Democrats Urge Bush to 'Quit Digging' Fiscal Hole

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Democrats on Saturday urged President Bush to reconsider his economic agenda in the face of record budget deficits and a swelling national debt.
"Back here in West Texas, we have a saying: When you find yourself in a hole, the first rule is to quit digging," Texas Rep. Charlie Stenholm -- a staunch fiscal conservative and leader of the so-called Blue Dog Coalition of Democratic budget hawks -- said in the party's weekly radio address.
"As the results are coming in on the third year of the Republican economic agenda, it has become clear that they have produced large deficits and a growing debt burden, but have not delivered jobs or economic growth," Stenholm said.
Since Bush took office, the U.S. economy has shed more than 3 million private sector jobs, while projected 10-year budget surpluses of more than $5 trillion had been replaced by projected deficits of more than $3 trillion, he said.
