US dissolves Iraqi governing council, installs new interim government
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20040601/wl_mideast_afp/iraq_worldwrap&cid=1514&ncid=1473

BAGHDAD (AFP) - The US-led occupation force in Iraq (news - web sites) dissolved the Governing Council which it set up after toppling Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) 14 months ago and installed an new interim government as the UN Security Council prepared to debate a resolution on the country's future. snip

The optimistic words glossed over days, if not weeks, of acrimonious wrangling over the make-up of the government between the chief US civilian administrator, Paul Bremer, the chief UN envoy to Iraq, Lakhdar Brahimi, and members of the outgoing governing council.

After refusing the presidency, Pachachi told a news conference that he was not a stooge of the US-led forces, formally known as the Coalition Provisional Authority, but he had been opposed by "certain parties" because of his "democratic and liberal" views.

"It is a lie ... that the Coalition Provisional Authority wanted to impose me as president," he said. "It's wrong, I was never the CPA candidate, they had another candidate."

more...Finally. A headline with a little truth.

1. Was this scheduled to transpire anyway?
Was this part of the planned transition, or did Bremer do this in a pique? The article is not that clear to me. If the latter, this seems like big news. If the former, just the usual stuff.

7. I thought it was...
...a rather abrupt decision, myself. I think it is big news.

Probably trying to take the focus off of Chalabi, and to be able to crow that they did this before the June 30th deadline.

Just my opinion.

3. All they did was transfer one name for another, seeing as the key...
appointees are from the IGA. New boss, same as the old, it is still the CPA.

5. US dissolves old stooge "government", appoints new stooge "government".
Someone needs to explain that you cannot give "full sovereignty",
it is taken, or it is not full sovereignty but some form of
satrapy.
