Indigenous cultures face struggle, UN says
The United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has warned that indigenous peoples around the world still face threats to their lives and the destruction of their beliefs, cultures, languages and way of life.
His remarks coincide with the publication of a non-governmental report that says a decade-long UN effort to improve the rights of indigenous communities has brought little change.
The BBC reports poor access to safe clean water, sanitation and health services are just a few of the many problems highlighted in the report jointly published by the British-based non-governmental organisation Help Unlimited and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
They found that indigenous people still feel ignored and marginalised. (snip/...)
