WASHINGTON — The United States has sent aviation security experts to Iraq, Europe and Asia amid fears that terrorists could use shoulder-fired missiles to shoot down passenger jets, officials said Thursday.
Brian Roehrkasse, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman, said US experts have been sent to help improve security in Basra and Baghdad in Iraq, in Manila as well as in a number of European and other Asian airports, which he declined to specify.
In Manila, the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (ASG) said the US Department of Homeland Security sent a member of the Federal Aviation Administration and two others from the Transport Security Administration (TSA) to check on security gaps at the international airport.
ASG director Senior Superintendent Andres Caro said yesterday US anti-terrorism experts made an assessment of security at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport two months ago together with members of the ASG and NAIA police.
The TSA, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of State and other US agencies are working on the effort to improve security at the airports, Roehrkasse said. (snip/...)
