Powell's battle cry fails test of time
http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/front/6496667.htm

Powell marshaled what were described as intercepted Iraqi conversations, reconnaissance photos of sites, defectors' accounts, and other intelligence sources.

In the United States, his intelligence file swung opinion toward war.

But in Baghdad, when the satellite broadcast ended, Lt. Gen. Amer al-Saadi, science adviser to Saddam Hussein, appeared before the audience and dismissed the U.S. case as "stunts" aimed at swaying the uninformed.

How does Powell's Feb. 5 indictment look today? He has said several times since then that he stands by it, the State Department said last week. Here is an Associated Press review of major elements, based both on what was known in February and what has been learned since:

Absolutely fantastic article, a must read, that examines in detail all of Powell's claims made to the UN in his speech justifying invasion.

The Inquirer is apparently making a bit of progress in publishing the truth in an appropriate fashion. This article deserves to be on the front page, not buried on page 18 or whatever.
Last week, a report on Gore's speech appeared on page 8. A day later, after Chimpy's handlers put him on a leash and led him out of the Crawford Primate House to give us some outrageous assurances about the Great Iraqi Liberation, the Inquirer saw fit to put that tale atop the front page.

3. Powell cannot be rehabilitated. He is as bad as the rest of them.
Worse, maybe, since I think he was once a decent human being who had principals. I may be wrong about that.

he was part of the Pentagon effort to downplay the reports of massacres in Vietnam. While at the Pentagon, he issued a report after My Lai which said "U.S. military relations with Vietnamese citizens are excellent."

6. Sadly this story didn't make it to our local paper
neither did the Washington Post story. Both AP and WPost stories are often carried - so clearly the decision not to carry was local.

Would love to hear how many other places this story did make it into prominant coverage?

THIS is the sort of story - especially with Powell who, among the general public, is still regarded as an "honorable man" - could start to shake those in the publc who are either lulled to sleep or are in active denial about the current administration, their deceptions, the level of animosity that the US is generating around the world due to these deceptions, and that these behaviors just might be making us more vulnerable rather than more secure. Denial is powerful. Stories like these which are more broad than the single item "Niger story" might have some strong anti-denial powers to them.

16. A similar story in the conservative Fresno Bee
This one was by Bob Kemper of the Chicago Tribune. Not the same story, but very similar in nature. That means there are two such stories out there. Fresno Bee and the McClatchy news is conservative. They are also part of the Modesto Bee and Sacramento Bee. This would pick up the south Valley edition of the Bee in Visalia and Lemoore also. This may not go well with the NAS Lemoore people.

Did somebody get the word out to the conservative areas in this country. I did not see this story run in the S.F. Chronicle today. They are liberal in their stance. Seems to be running in conservative and swing state areas.

Can somebody find out if there is a force, somebody like a Geo. Soros, behind this. It came out on a Sunday, the biggest subscription day for newspapers. This was not a page 10 of the thursdy papers article.
