http://www.news-register.net/news/story/062202004_new03.asp WOODSFIELD-After an announcement Friday by Ormet Primary Aluminum Corp. concerning the curtailment of one potline at the Hannibal Reduction Plant, Monroe County commissioners responded Tuesday, noting that the economic climate in Monroe County is suffering.
During Tuesday's regular session, the board received a letter from Lisa Riedel, Ormet's director of human resources. The letter stated that the 131 layoffs are due to the Army Corps of Engineers' closure of the Ohio River at the McAlpine Locks and Dam for about 14 days in August. In addition, Riedel sent a list of hourly and salaried positions that were scheduled for elimination beginning Tuesday and continuing through June 15.

The Board of Monroe County Commissioners noted that the layoffs are unfortunate and are detrimental to the county's economic status.
"I hate to see anybody get laid off," Commissioner Mick Schumacher said. "We've a very high unemployment rate right now, and it's just a bad time to see that come."
