"The fog persists in Iraq," The Los Angeles Times' editorial declared.
"The future of Iraq is not much clearer and the popular legitimacy of the new government is an unknown" just one day after the new leaders were sworn in, ahead of the official takeover from the United States on July 1, the daily said.
"Iraq's interim leaders will have to act quickly and skillfully if they are to gain enough authority to carry out their primary mission, which is to prepare for national elections six months from now," The Washington Post agreed.
