Iraq's Sadr Tries to Shore Up Truce, Mediators Say

NAJAF, Iraq (Reuters) - Rebel Iraqi cleric Moqtada al-Sadr has agreed to new steps to shore up a shaky truce and end weeks of fighting in the country's holy Shi'ite cities, Shi'ite politicians said early on Friday after hours of talks.


They said Sadr had agreed to withdraw his fighters from the city of Najaf within two days, as long as U.S. forces also withdrew.


Sadr also proposed that neutral observers monitored the truce, the Shi'ite politicians said.

The fighting erupted as Sadr met Iraqi Shi'ite leaders, including former Governing Council member Ahmad Chalabi, to try to salvage the truce with U.S. forces.
