FBI chief wants new intelligence service
FBI Director Robert Mueller, fighting calls for an independent domestic intelligence agency, proposed Thursday that the bureau create its own service to gather information to combat terrorism.

The division would be largely independent from the rest of the FBI and have its own budget. It would include all the bureau's intelligence-gathering resources, from translators to surveillance activities. The chief would report directly to Mueller.

Mueller told a House Appropriations subcommittee that an independent domestic spy agency would have to duplicate much of the expertise already in the FBI and harm what's become the bureau's top priority: fighting terrorism.

"Any reform proposal must recognize that intelligence is fundamental to successful FBI operations," he said. "Intelligence functions are woven throughout the fabric of the bureau, and any changes to this integrated approach would be counterproductive."

1. Ooh! More big government!
I love it! Let's cut taxes for the super-rich and increase the federal bureaucracy at the same time! Then, when the deficit becomes so big that it actually becomes self-aware and start crushing everything in its path, we can kill Medicare, Social Security and every other entitlement program! Woo hoo!

3. We already do this within the FBI and obviously they suck at it and it's
costs America more money because they suck at it.

We'll save money be separating it out. I just hope they do it while a democrat is in office so that we'll get at least 20 years of Democratic appointees who are patriots guinding it.

2. Creating an intelligent 'service' under the legislatively unrestrictive...
nature of the current government is certainly not in the interest of the American people. Use the police, use the FBI and the court systems to prosecute criminals though nevertheless referred to as terrorists, but don't destroy the fundamental human rights recognized by our constitution in the process.

To the intelligence service: I just don't trust you to protect my rights without the rule of law to ensure that you are held accountable for violating my rights. This accountability is what ensures a legally stable society.

This isn't a new activity. It's an old activity that should be shifted to a new organization that isn't so compromised.

Clinton have Freeh something like 100 million bucks to investitage Al Qaeda. Freeh hated Clinton so he spent the money investigation internet wire fraud. He didn't admit it until about 2002.

Politics within the FBI is compromising the welfare of average Americans and Meuller is right to borrow this idea which Edwards had in his Real Solutions book.

5. Do not let them pull this shit. They are, in the usual right wing style,
blaming someone else for their misdeeds and proposing more fascism.

6. Maybe they should find the anthrax killers
...and quit conspiring with the ISI, then maybe one could take their counter-terror mantra a little more seriously.
