The 94th is made up of soldiers largely from Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine and was initially deployed to military bases in the South in December 2002. The unit left for Iraq in April 2003.

Some soldiers from the 94th have served in the Sunni Triangle, one of the most violent regions in Iraq, training the Iraqi police force, while others have been guarding convoys or checkpoints. They were initially scheduled to return home last December, but their deployment was extended. On April 10, just hours before they were to leave for home, their deployment was extended for a second time. Family members say the unit's new orders could keep it in Iraq until mid-October.

Steve Stromvall, a spokesman for the Army Reserve, called the 94th a "tough-luck unit."
