Catholic U. Won't Recognize NAACP Chapter
WASHINGTON (AP) - The president of the NAACP is criticizing a decision by Catholic University of America not to recognize a chapter of the civil rights group on campus. "It is outright discrimination and intolerance all rolled into one," NAACP President Kweisi Mfume said Friday, just outside the campus and surrounded by about 20 activists and student chapter leaders from other universities.

He said it was the first time in decades that a university had not allowed a student chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He threatened to sue if the group was unable to come to an agreement with the Roman Catholic university.

The university rejected a student's attempt to start a chapter in April on the ground that the campus already had two groups that represent black students: the Black Organization of Students at Catholic University of America and Minority Voices, an umbrella group for minority organizations.
...
School administrators also raised concern about the group's support of the April 25 "March for Women's Lives," an abortion rights rally. Nakas said student groups are not allowed to advocate positions that are contrary to the teachings of the church, which opposes abortion. But he said that was not the main reason for rejecting the NAACP chapter.

2. Catholicism: lurching toward irrelevance
The extremist behavior of the Catholic church is gradually isolating it from rational consideration as it takes refuge in astonishing medievalism.

Let's review, shall we? Pedophiles are sheltered until caught; donations meant for charitable purposes become settlement slush funds. Gays and lesbians are evil. Population explosion is encouraged through the ban on contraception. Women's reproductive rights are constantly under attack. Politicians, berated by church leaders, face theocratic control through the threat of exclusion from the church's sacraments. And now the NAACP, the nation's premier civil rights organization, is banned from campus.

Sigh. The Lord may work in mysterious ways, but there is little mysterious about this Talibanesque institution. It is a stubborn enemy of modernity.

4. I'm a CUA grad
having just (three weeks ago) gotten my PhD. in social work from the school. It is "the" catholic university of America - sort of the Catholic Church's offical school.

And it is incredibly conservative. I won't be giving them any alumni donations until they change their acts.

6. Ahhh, so it is the NAACP support for abortion rights that is the issue
How long will the Catholic hierarchy go on pissing people off before someone decides to take their tax exempt status?

7. How does banning a private organization
From a private campus impact their tax-exempt status?

Especially when that organization has take a public position in direct conflict with that held by the Catholic Church?

9. If I'm not mistaken...
...the Catholic church is also against divorce, the Pope is against *'s profitable war, and even contraception is "anathema" to the church... but somehow they don't bother to uphold their "values" in areas in which they know most people think they're nuts.

8. Roman Catholic Grand Old Party (RCGOP)
This is the new moniker of the Catholic Church- in America Christians think Jesus was a delegate to the last GOP convention-Given all the wealth and rich men running this country one would see the Christian Church become an advocate of its founder instead of being a shill for the very type of hypocrasy which Jesus couldn't stand-where would Jesus be now on earth-in the poorest neighborhoods and the most forgotten people-not in the velvet corridors of Washingtons power elite

10. Is the ROTC allowed on campus? Army recruiters? They don't
represent the teachings of the church either. What about rich people or those who cast the first stone or those who do not love their neighbor.
Why does the selective enforcement of rules start and end with controlling women's reproduction? Just curious.
