Cheney faces grilling over leak as Bush election hopes slump
(snip)

'That is a very serious problem,' said John Zogby, head of polling firm Zogby International. One of America's most respected pollsters, Zogby believes Bush's numbers are so bad that the election has become Kerry's to lose.

Last week Bush met religious groups to revive a stalled plan to encourage faith organisations to bid for government money to run charity projects. The move is controversial for blurring the lines between church and state, but is popular with conservative Christians.

Bush's lurch to the right has opened up chasms in the previously united Republican party. Moderates are becoming increasingly vocal in their criticism. Central to this group is Arizona Senator John McCain, a Vietnam war hero and rival to Bush for the 2000 presidential nomination.

Speculation is rife that McCain could be lured over to the Democrats as Kerry's running mate. McCain has dismissed the idea, but sources close to the senator said that he would probably consider any offer. 'He is a real rogue,' said one source.

3. I'm disgusted, too, with McCain speculation.
As a Repub, he's one of the less inflammatory ones. But we've got plenty of good women and men to choose from in the Dem party.

This McCain rumor needs to die, before bush dumps cheney and lures McCain with god-knows-what to the 2004 ticket.

Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 10:50 PM by nu_duer
doesn't it?

I'm personally ok with the speculation as long as it doensn't come to pass, just because I suspect the prospect scares the hell out of the bush gang.

4. Gag me with a McCain
Glad to see I'm not the only one tired of the "Kerry-McCain" speculation horseshit. It has Republican media written all over it, and it proves they're damn desperate and know their "favored" candidate doesn't have a monkey's chance in hell this November. I just wish posters on DU would quit trying to push the McCain crap, as well.

Give it up, guys. We know where you're coming from.

8. latest figures must put Bush in the 30's
The Reagan love fest will put Bush's problems on the backburner for a while.

the only way I'd accept McCain as VP was if he officially switched over to the Democrats. We should be able to accept him if he did that, after all the GOP accepted Reagan who was a democrat up until he was 51.

20. McCain would have to change more than the letter after his name.
For all the "moderate" label, he still holds some dreadfully right-wing positions. He would be little different from Zell Miller. Would you want HIM as VP??

39. No effing way? Not even if its a choice of * as President or McCain?
I'd personally take McCain anyday as Dem VP and thus the prospect of possibly President if it meant beating Chimpy...

Last night, I asked my husband who can't stand Bush and the Repuke Party but when asked point blank who he thought Kerry should choose as VP who would help Kerry beat Bush and be a good President if he had to be, my husband said without hesitation McCain...this surprised me, but he had clearly thought about this previously....

Just something to think about....think of the long term picture and hopefully one without Bush....

49. We don't need McCain..
... to beat Bush*, in fact the idea has as much a chance of hurting our cause as it does helping. McCain is a pug through and through, don't let the occassional lapse fool you.

I would not vote for McCain for dogcatcher. Period.

But truthfully, I've never believed this nonsense anyway. This is a trial balloon, being floated by someone, that has pretty much already popped.

Meanwhile in Amerika, we're force-fed the drivel of "Bush Meets With Pope." The rest of the world knows all about bu$h--and it's ugly.

Meanwhile in Amerika, we get "Popular Wartime President." There's a new circle of Hell being constructed for the so-called journalists in this benighted country who helped put that Worthless Little Shit in the White House!

'It came out of Cheney's office. These are a very serious group of people,' said Mel Goodman, a former top CIA officer.

and

'If they can get the proof, someone will pay for it,' said Larry Johnson, a former CIA agent and senior counter-terrorism official at the State Department.

26. I like the idea of McCain...besides beating bush*...
I would like to see some unison in the country...and I think McCain as VP will take all the heat out of the ultra conservative reight wing republicans...and the TRUE republicans will rally around Kerry and McCain. It would be truly a GREAT opportunity to bring the country together...and show how bush*...given that same opportunity trashed it!!!

I do not want to see Clinton bashing...then bush* bashing...then Kerry bashing...then jeb* bashing...I would rather see the far reight wing go down in flames!!!!

Especially this weekend, to avoid Reagan worship. To begin the summer, they're running all the shows about barbecue & grilling.

I can imagine Alton Brown discussing whether a rub or a marinade would work better on the VP.

Then turn him over to Bobby Flay!
