U.S. soldier from Puerto Rico killed by mortar blast in Iraq

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - A Puerto Rican soldier was killed in a mortar attack at a U.S. military compound in Iraq, the Army said Monday.

Sgt. Melvin Y. Mora Lopez, 27, was struck by shrapnel from the mortar Sunday, Army spokesman Jose Pagan said.

The attack occurred at Camp Cooke, where Mora was assigned, Pagan said. The camp is located on the Al Taji air base, a former Iraqi air force facility north of Baghdad.

As of Monday, June 7, 820 U.S. service members have died since the beginning of military operations in Iraq in March 2003, according to the Defense Department. Of those, 603 died as a result of hostile action and 217 died of non-hostile causes.

The British military has reported 58 deaths; Italy, 18; Spain, eight; Bulgaria, six; Ukraine, four; Poland, three; Thailand, two; Denmark, El Salvador, Estonia and the Netherlands have reported one each.
