Iraqi newspaper editor in Bush protest plea

The editor of an Iraqi newspaper has appealed to Irish people to take to the streets during George Bush’s forthcoming visit and march against the ongoing US-led occupation.

Dr Ibhrahim Allawi was sentenced to death in the 1970s and lived in exile from Saddam Hussein’s Baath regime for 35 years. He is the editor of a leading Baghdad newspaper against the occupation, Al Ghad.

Dr Allawi ran the periodical publication in London from 1978 until 1995. Written in Arabic, it reported on the Iraqi economy, the working class movement and the terror of the Baath regime.

1. Allawi refused entry to Ireland

Dr Ibrahim Allawi, who is the editor of a Baghdad newspaper, had been due to speak on day-to-day life for ordinary people during the US-led occupation of Iraq.

However, immigration gardaí are threatening to put him on a flight back to London if he fails to obtain a valid visa for Ireland.

The Irish Anti-War Movement, which organised the visit, said it is an attempt to silence critical views on American foreign policy ahead of George W Bush's arrival in Ireland.
