Broadway's Best Shows Too Risque for Republicans

Gay puppets, transvestites, assassins and a pedophile child killer piled up Tony honors on Sunday but those shows will be shunned by Republican delegates at the political party's convention in New York this summer.

With thousands of Republicans set to descend on the Big Apple to nominate President Bush (news - web sites) for re-election, convention organizers decided to treat delegates to the glitz of Broadway before they knuckled down to the business of politics.

But Republican organizers, selling themselves as the family-values party, decided to buy tickets to tame shows like "42nd Street" and Disney productions like "Aida" and "The Lion King," avoiding more offbeat fare.

Besides Tony winners such as the naughty puppet musical "Avenue Q" and best play "I Am My Own Wife," about a German transvestite, other hits including Mel Brooks' "The Producers," were vetoed by those arranging Broadway outings.

5. "Assassins" is a fave

"Assassins" is among my top 3 fave shows ... the Rethugs could really learn a thing or two from it. Gives one a lot to think about concerning the American dream (esp. when it's thwarted), guns, etc.

9. I demur. I believe it's only a very few (the "leaders") who enjoy ...

... some unconventional libidinous pastimes. I think the basic conservative personality is one that feels sexually ignorant, sexually inexperienced, sexually "inadequate," and sexually deprived and looks at those who have greater experience, access, and comfort with sexuality with envy and resentment.

I knew a conservative guy many, many years ago who was engaged to a nursing student in her fourth year ... which included substantial in-hospital training. He was very uncomfortable with the idea that she saw other men's genitals, and bathed them. He was very uncomfortable with the degree of familiarity her and her nursing student friends had with male bodies and the casual nature of the jokes they told. It really didn't matter to him that these were sick and injured people who required hospitalization. He just didn't like her knowing more than what little he did. It was about his own insecurities.

I think most 'conservatives' have deep insecurities about their own sexuality and about their own understanding of sex itself. I think, at the core of their animus, is envy and resentment.

who won the Tony Award for his portrayal of gay Aussie performer
Peter Allen (once married, briefly, to Liza Minelli) in "The
Boy From Oz". He's a marvellous performer, and all-round nice
guy. But I don't think Repubs would like his show.
