Bush twins could give speeches, first lady says
http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/president/2004-06-08-bush-twins_x.htm

SEA ISLAND, Ga. — The Bush twins, who have tried to stay out of view for most of their father's political career, may give campaign speeches this year, Laura Bush said Tuesday.

In an interview in the library of a borrowed house on the island where leaders of the world's industrial nations are meeting, Bush said Barbara and Jenna, 22, will work at the Arlington, Va., campaign headquarters when they return soon from a European vacation. They graduated from college this spring.

"They'll go work at the headquarters and then, if they feel confident enough, they may go out on the campaign trail a little bit," she said. Their focus will be young voters.

9. Well, in that case I've lost all respect for them
As James Wolcott wrote in July's Vanity Fair:

I've come to have a grudging regard for the Bush twins. Jenna and Barbara may be spoiled brats – tarty party girls – but at least they're not perpetuating false pretenses, being used as attractive props and tweeting pieties they don't believe. An anonymous chum was quoted in Rush and Molloy's New York Daily News gossip column as saying that the daughters "don't buy into the conservative movement," and young Barbara's opposition to the execution of Karla Faye Tucker earns her special commendation..

"Every step of progress means a duty repudiated, and a scripture torn up," George Bernard Shaw wrote, and thus far the Bush twins have been undutiful daughters, licensed perhaps by their lenient mother, who's trapped in a gilded cage and cannot bring herself to sing.

21. Wow. I remember when Wolcott was sharper than that.
If party-hardy naivete is all it takes to win Wolcott's regard these days, then maybe he'd like to hear me play my armpit rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Put a Bush daughter on either side of me, and we'll harmonize.

I've always liked Wolcott, a very keen stylist. The pity is he writes for a magazine by, for and about spoiled brats. Do that long enough, and you will start to view the beautiful people as the real people--and begin to read triumph in the babble of the blitzed-out rich.

26. oh, you'll want to read this one ...
Wolcott skewers the "strong women" Bush has supposedly "surrounded himself with" in Vanity Fair this month ... the piece is brutal and hilarious. I found myself saying, "ooooooh, GOOD ONE," about 25 times as I read the story (the one referencing the Bush twins, whose upbringing he characterizes with the words "coddling" and "entitlement" -- practically guaranteed to "spit out a pair of Hilton sisters"!!!

Wolcott makes Dubya look like a real creep, and some of the women around him look like mental cases. And he makes us think even LESS of Barbara (Sr.) than we already do!!!!

34. Have you actually read Vanity Fair lately?
Graydon Carter is vehemently anti-Bush. Every month it seems there are very unflattering articles re: Bushco in its pages. It's got some celebrity items as well, but it most certainly is NOT "by, for and about spoiled brats".

39. Er. . .have you? Let's see if VF is a brat publication
I say that Vanity Fair is "by, for and about spoiled brats." You strenuously deny it. Let's see if a recent cover helps your case or mine.

David Beckham's on the front, shirt off, abs glistening. See for yourself: www.condenet.com/mags/vanityfair. "Plus," promises the blurb, "a whole lot of personal stuff about him and Posh." Well, well. One point for me.

The next blurb is for a piece titled "Same Skeletons, Same Closet: Inside Bush and Kerry's Secret Yale Brotherhood." If the piece is, as advertised, a look at the aristo origins of Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, I might have to read it. Half a point for you, since it's at least partly critical of Bush (but apparently bipartisan in its bashing).

The next blurb reads "Class and Trash in St.-Tropez." It's about "the resort that was born with a thong on." Heh; weren't we all? One point for me.

Next: "Patriot Games: Richard Clark Still Has Something to Say." One point for you.

Looks like we're both right. There's some anti-Bush material, as you state. And there's a rich helping of brat fare, as I state. Should I get points for the perfume inserts? ;-)

Over the years since it was revived in the 80s, VF has published some useful journalism. Equally has it published plenty of right wing tripe from the pen of C. Hitchens and others. And I've nothing against its trashy side, all the fawning over aristos, celebs and fashion victims--my point was that this house policy of celebrating brats drags down brilliant writers like Wolcott. If the magazine's half to three-quarters crap, there's no preventing spills.

45. huh?
I would think one would appreciate the fact that it includes some writers who have something of substance to say.
This assessment of quality of the publication based on audience seems to be an imposition of self-presumed intellectual superiority.

Gore's daughter speaks at DNC

LOS ANGELES -- Al Gore's eldest daughter tried to soften her father's image in a Democratic National Convention speech, praising his "old-fashioned politeness" as "refreshing in today's world" and providing personal insight into the man who could be president.
<snip>

To the delight of the roaring crowd, Schiff walked off stage arm-in-arm with her dad. Her mother Tipper and siblings Kristin and Albert III applauded from the audience.
Schiff's goal was to humanize the candidate best known as a stiff policy wonk. So the 27-year-old and mother of a 13-month-old highlighted the role that family plays in Gore's life and shared stories designed to illustrate the kind of father he has been to his four children.
"Dad is a man of faith in the most gutsy, practical sense. He wants to see goodness prevail," an animated Schiff said.
<snip>
Delegates from Alaska cheered as Schiff recalled how he taught her to build an igloo that she and a friend wanted to spend the night in. So Gore bundled them up, ferried out hot chocolate and "welcomed us like adventurers back from the North Pole" when "we ended up waddling back inside, our lips blue from the cold."

How to ditch the secret service guys so you can get plastered.

Living with an alcoholic father

I'm *sure* that the twins could give speeches.

What's more, they are both educated, literate and (barring the effects

That puts them well above their father in terms of suitability to run
the country, never mind just give speeches. Let 'em go!
