For Bush, a good week
Over the past several weeks, Democratic challenger John Kerry has hammered the president over foreign policy. He has been especially critical over not involving more of the international community. "They looked to force before exhausting diplomacy, they bullied when they should have persuaded, they have gone it alone when they should have assembled a team," Kerry said in a speech on May 27 in Seattle.

But this week between Iraq, the summit, and the death of Ronald Reagan, the Massachusetts senator has been effectively sidelined.

American University's James Thurber points out that the approval ratings can make major swings. The ratings for the elder President Bush went from 91 percent right after the Iraq war to 38 percent before he lost the election. He says of the current president, "Bush is not doing well in the battleground states, and those are the polls to watch."

2. Bush has been "effectively sidelined," too
by the way. Also, can anyone cite a case where a president's approval ratings went from the 40s five months before the election to the 50s by the time of the election?

But all in all, it's been a fabulous year for Laura and me.

4. I hate to bring up such a "fine" point of contention, but...
Edited on Wed Jun-09-04 04:32 PM by FleshCartoon
...didn't Kerry announce that he was halting his campaign this week out of respect? That wouldn't put it in the category of having been "sidelined" then, would it?

It's that sort of slight slant in the media that we have to be on alert for.

8. Yup, you are right.
What a horrible piece of cheerleader reporting. Belongs on the gossip page.

6. Just what I was thinking
Bush and his supporters like it when people die. If Cheney can't make the ticket this year, look for Bush to name The Grim Reaper as his running mate.

9. I hate to be an "I toldya so."
But I toldya so. Kerry's trying to be a nice guy and calling off his campaign for the Reagan beatification/deification/Leninization, turned out to be a bad, bad idea.

10. "Effectively sidelined"?? Hell's Bells!! Kerry suspended the bulk of...
...his campaigning out of respect for the funeral proceedings for Reagan!

Wait until next week...Kerry'll pick up right where he left off. And so will the leaks from the CIA, DIA, senior officers of the U. S. military, and a strong faction of the DoJ/FBI.

14. .
Mid-June: A little Clinton to cleanse the Reagan encrusted palate (Bill's book and "The Hunting of the President").

Late June: Michael Moore steps up to the plate to introduce the REAL * to the American people.

July: Kerry begin to hit hard, a VP announcement, the dem convention.

August: Masses descend on NYC to protest * and the rethug convention.

Add a steady stream of revelations re Plame, torturegate, etc. and we might be celebrating on 11/02.
