Poll: Kerry Leads Bush by 7 Pct. Points

LOS ANGELES - Democratic candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) leads President Bush (news - web sites) 51 percent to 44 percent among American voters in a two-way race for president, according to a Los Angeles Times poll published Thursday.


Kerry's margin of 7 percentage points shrinks only slightly to 6 percentage points, 48-42, in a three-way race with independent candidate Ralph Nader (news - web sites), poll results show.


More than a third of those surveyed said they don't know enough about Kerry to decide whether he will make a better president than Bush. Asked who is more likely to flip-flop on issues, they chose Kerry by 2 to 1.


But by 56 percent to 16 percent, voters felt that Bush was "too ideological and stubborn." They gave Kerry better marks for ideas for strengthening the economy, building respect for the U.S. around the world, and handling the problems of cost and access to health care.

4. The upside to being a "flip-flopper"

is that critical thinking voters will realize that changing your mind after a bad decision is a positive trait. the comments that Bush is too stubborn indicate that some people are beginning to figure this out. It still burns me though that Kerry is considered a bigger flip-flopper than idiot boy, the facts just don't bear that out.

14. Is there not another such poll recently unveiled??

I have watched only a few minutes of tv these last several days because it is so impossible to pick up any news. However, at one of those moments about 2-3 days ago, CNN stuck into their programming a segment about a new poll (and I believe it was either Gallup or Pew) that put Kerry 50 and Bush 44 and said that in the poll previous to this one Kerry had just a two point lead over Bush. They noted that this comes after all the WWII memorializing but before the Reagan funeral (I don't think the funeral is going to do Bush one iota of good). In so many ways it's all about the perception of who is winning and this is such great news.

15. Looks like Naderman is starting to pull votes from Shrub. If they were

evenly distributed across the U.S. that would be ok. Unfortunately I am afraid that Nader might draw enough from Kerry in some key states to tip them to Bush. However, if this lead holds it won't matter. 56% think Bush is too ideological and stubborn. If only 3% of those go for Nader, that still leaves 53% for Kerry - probably enough for a comfortable electoral sweep, if not a landslide.

21. I don't want to get complacent, but I think that Kerry has not yet begun

to fight, and I think that will turn out to have been a good strategy.

The Chimp is shooting himself in the foot every time he moves or attempts to speak. The news out of Washington and Iraq is one long bad story. Why should Kerry get in the way when his opponent is destroying himself?

And the worst that folks can say about Kerry is that they "don't know him that well - seems to flip-flop - probably better on - who is Kerry?"

Americans start their election campaigns ridiculously early, anyway. Kerry shouldn't have to spend millions of dollars "defining himself" six months before the election. It's what he does two months, one month, two weeks before the election that will count.

I think Kerry is doing fine.
