In the week ending June 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 352,000, an increase of 12,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 340,000. The 4-week moving average was 346,000, an increase of 4,750 from the previous week's revised average of 341,250.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent for the week ending May 29, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.4 percent.
The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 29 was 2,881,000, a decrease of 106,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,987,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,934,500, a decrease of 19,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,954,000.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 308,443 in the week ending June 5, an increase of 5,216 from the previous week. There were 421,190 initial claims in the comparable week in 2003.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent during the week ending May 29, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,650,526, a decrease of 52,399 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.7 percent and the volume was 3,438,523.

June 10, 2004: 8:53 AM EDT NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Jobless claims rose last week, the government said Thursday, with the number of people filing for initial unemployment benefits above Wall Street expectations.
The Labor Department report showed 352,000 filed for first-time benefits in the week ended June 5, compared with a revised 340,000 the previous week.
Economists surveyed by Briefing.com were forecasting filings would drop to 335,000 in the most recent period.

The Associated Press WASHINGTON June 10, 2004 — The number of new people signing up for unemployment benefits rose last week. But even with the increase, claims are still hovering at a level that points to a recovery in the jobs market.
The Labor Department reported Thursday that new applications for unemployment insurance increased by a seasonally adjusted 12,000 to 352,000 for the week ending June 5.
