Cop was killed for his gun, authorities say
http://www.freep.com/news/locmac/cop10_20040610.htm

we are probably going start seeing a lot of this within a year or two.

"Sterling Heights Police Chief Barnett Jones said Wednesday Berner, 33, is a former U.S. Marine and Gulf War veteran who was dishonorably discharged in connection with a robbery and assault in North Carolina. The discharge reportedly dates back to the early 1990s."

"That plan, according to Jones, was to get a handgun for future crimes and go into hiding. His military-taught survival skills are helping him elude federal, state and local authorities, Jones said."

"He was killed by a shotgun blast to the head about three minutes later. Witnesses said they saw the shooter get out of a red Camaro, lean into the patrol car, take the officer's .40 caliber Glock handgun and drive away. "

1. This happened 5 minutes from my home
Our state recently passed CCW laws. Every Repub in the state is crowing because THEY say shootings didn't go up after laws were passed. Lately, shootings have been skyrocketing. Not sure if there's a connection, however, need to look at the statistics re: cops being shot with their own weapons in response to the drivel: "if you arm everyone, the bad guys will be afraid to brandish a weapon!" I agree that we will see more disturbed veterans acting out. Just my 2 cents.

2. Shotgun is not a concealed weapon
But it certainly is plenty deadly. And I don't see how CCW laws have anything to do with a disturbed military vet who certainly knows how to use weapons going out and murdering a cop. If he wants to kill a police officer, you think he's going to give a shit about carrying a gun if he's not supposed to?

5. They don't, I was trying to get
2 thoughts in one post. I knew I would get slammed but I'm short on time today. My main point was that allowing someone to carry a weapon whether concealed or not does not make crazies nor criminals quake in their boots. My other point was that Michigan has had a noticeable upturn in gun related slayings this year.

4. I had to read the story because the snippets made it seem like
the killer's name is Wedensday Berner and that he killed Chief Jones 3 minutes after telling some reporter about Berner's plan!?!?

What a nightmare.

6. only cops should have guns...
because criminals will just steal them from civillians. :eyes:

Anyways sorry for the cop and any family he might have, a shotgun will definately fuck you up.

That being said I've heard alot of antigun people claim that criminals will just steal guns from civillians, but if you want to know something scary it used to be fairly common for people to steal actual "machine guns" such as real fullyauto/selectfire M-16s from national guard armories, instead of the semi-auto AR-15s that the assault weapon ban is trys to restrict.

I would hope and assume that, that isnt the case anymore with increased security, yadda yadda yadda, but thats definately .

7. something isn't right about the story
sounds like they are speculating that he shot the cop for the gon "for future crimes" how the hell do they know this? i think this cop was killed for a reason. former marine takes shotgun, looks for a likely cop to kill just to get his handgun, for use in future crimes, all in a mall parking lot? it doesn't make any kind of sense. even stupid criminals would buy a cheap handgun to use, not just kill a man to get his gun for future crimes.

8. Ghetto residents of Warsaw did this
They needed guns to defend themselves. Guns were forbidden to them.
