I think the line has been crossed here. Son of a bitch asked the leader of one strongest religous blocks in America to do something that is totally political to the max.

I think its time to take all tax exemptions away from churches then they can say or do anything they want. Of course after they sign up as a PAC.

The Pope lectures Bush

It became the shortest Papal visit in history: just 15 minutes. But illness and weakness did not hinder the Pope from giving president Bush sharp criticism.

"Don't try to come here waving a medal. I'm still saying no to the war".

St. Peter Square was virtually empty, except for several thousand police and american security forces when USA's President Bush came to the Vatican City yesterday. Cardinal Angelo Sodano escorted the guest up to the ailing Pontiff, who remained seated when the President arrived.

"You know very well the Church's unalterable position on this war," said the Pope and urged the president to quickly normalize the situation.

2. The more I think about this the more pissed off I get...

Chimpy totally crossed the line here and asked a religious leader to crack down on his church subordinates to press for things that are truly political in nature and could very well help his election chances.

Is this grounds for a lawsuit or something. Maybe a congressional investigation or denunciation.

The fukr crossed the line of church and state and they flaunt it.

3. I hope the alarmists get the message too

Most American Bishops are likewise resisting at least the call to carry conservative water if not as vocal as the Pope about the war. In fact this attempt is incensing bishops to speak out on other issues the GOP fails miserably at,.

But the media soup du jour is any maverick conservative dunce who spouts the wingnut party line to get Bush elected. NOT a big metropolitan like the Archbishop of NY or some major see, but anyone who can be twisted or cajoled into playing their game. And since the press plays up these noxious exceptions even people here tend to brand the whole institution.

Bush can count himself lucky not to get a major reaction on this attempt.

Here he is facing the most conservative Pope probably since Pius X, one who has done a lot of things to aid Reagan and the anti-Communists in order to liberate the Soviet bloc peacefully(hence the medal), getting shot in a KGB op in the process- and he comes asking favors in this high handed lame-brained way.

This accentuates the major split between conservatives of the past and those following Bush down his weird rabbit hole. He's also lucky the Pope isn't healthier. The papacy probably hasn't faced such an intimidating armed force since Napoleon kidnapped the Pope to make him crown him Emperor.
