(Henry) Hyde stands firmly with Catholic Church
http://www.suntimes.com/output/roeser/cst-edt-roes12.html

Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.) is on the Catholic bishops' case. As one of U.S. Roman Catholicism's most distinguished laymen, he is criticizing those who vacillate about denying the Eucharist to pro-abortion officeholders. His case is strengthened by his enormous public prestige: He's one of the few legislative leaders who can switch votes by speaking from the well of the House. Excepting only the speaker, Hyde probably has more influence than any other member, having led the Judiciary Committee to Bill Clinton's impeachment and then restoring the influential role of the International Relations Committee, pushing the administration's $15 billion HIV-AIDS bill, targeting help for 15 African and two Caribbean nations. Hyde was first to win a victory for the pro-life cause since Roe vs. Wade, with his Hyde Amendment in 1976 banning public spending on abortions. As a Congressional orator he is pre-eminent. No other spokesman can match him.

But it is within his own church that Hyde is determined to add more weight. And if the bishops want to know what the power of constituent pressure is like, they might well find it if those in the pews summon up anger like Hyde's at bishops' waffling on the issue. ''I am greatly disappointed,'' the congressman told me last week, ''with the failure of much of the church hierarchy to take an unequivocal stand on abortion.''

He added, ''The other day Cardinal McCarrick indicated, when asked if he would refuse Communion to pro-abortion officials, that he did not want a confrontation at the altar. Where better to have a confrontation?

''If the church doesn't come out strong and condemn those who want to receive Holy Communion while not in the state of sanctifying grace, then the church has lost its moral authority, and that is tragic.'' The ''consistent life ethic,'' originally proposed by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin (linking nuclear freeze and the death penalty to abortion), Hyde says, provides ''people like Ted Kennedy, Dick Durbin and John Kerry the cover they seek to maintain their Catholic affiliation and at the same time pander to Planned Parenthood.''

:wtf:

What is in the world is this? What is this creature serving? A snake would be more trustworthy.

to Rudy Giuliani, Arnold Schwarzenegger, George Pataki and Tom Ridge - all of whom support a woman's right to choose. I'd like to know who appointed Henry Hyde defender of the church, anyway.

I've never met anyone who is pro abortion.

This paper is owned by Hollinger, which owns many other RW rags like the Telegraph.

11. When are Catholics going to speak out?
Their religion is being used in a blatantly political manner to score points against Catholic Democrats, and only Catholic Democrats. Bush tried to get the Pope to light a fire under the bishops, and now Hyde is keeping this bullshit alive. Why aren't Catholics, regardless of their views on abortion, putting a stop to this Republican effort to instruct Catholic leadership?

Edited on Sat Jun-12-04 12:01 PM by AndyTiedye
> When are Catholics going to speak out?

When has that ever made any difference whatsoever in what the Catholic Church Does?

The leadership has joined the pro-theocracy forces now.
They don't care what the people think.
They don't think they have to. (They never did).
Now bend over....

30. Hyde just loves casting stones. I don't think that he would meet the
criterion that Jesus set for stone casting. Nor would the Bishops who would be so selective about which church teachings they would punish. Didn't they forget about the proclamations for peace and economic justice. I don't see any proposed communion ban for greedy war profiteers or those who are leaching off of the poor.

8. And just who are YOU running interference for Mr. Hyde?
Your role as an adulterer not withstanding. The job you were elected to do is to Serve and Protect the Constitution of the US.

You've forsworn an oath and are derelict in your duties to protect and defend against the Treasonous Acts of an unelected son of a president.

You and only you are responsible for allowing this bastardized version of a president to go unfettered to commit High Crimes and Misdemeanors against this country.

Resign from the House of Representative. If you believe in what you say. Ask for absolution from your confessor if think you will be forgiven for the blood on your hands and those of your colleagues in crime responsible for the deaths of countless thousands.

Mr. Hyde, House Manager in chief of Hypocrites.

12. "This hypocrite broke up my family"

HENRY HYDE, THE MAN WHO WILL SIT IN JUDGMENT ON PRESIDENT CLINTON, CONFIRMS THAT HE CARRIED ON A SECRET AFFAIR.

BY DAVID TALBOT | Fred Snodgrass, a 76-year-old Florida retiree, says he gets so upset when he watches Rep. Henry Hyde on TV that "I nearly jump out of my chair." Hyde, the Illinois Republican who heads the House Judiciary Committee, is on television often these days. Hyde's committee will decide whether the adulterous affair President Clinton carried on with a White House intern, and his efforts to keep it hidden, should be referred to the House of Representatives for impeachment proceedings. "I watched on TV the other night," said Snodgrass. "These politicians were going on about how he should have been on the Supreme Court, what a great man he is, how we're lucky to have him in Congress in charge of the impeachment case. And all I can think of is here is this man, this hypocrite who broke up my family."

18. This was the article that started the ball rolling
to expose these hypocrites for what they are. After this, Larry Flynt exposed a host of others, including Livingston, who resigned as the impeachment votes commenced.

The wingnuts accused the White House of being behind this story, but it wasn't.

Evidently they believe power is more important than goodness.

weeks back in which a poll was conducted and it found that 80% of Catholics do not approve of Bishops taking a political stance with Communion.

The bishops advocating their own rules are acting politically.
They have never been given permission to Judge anyone, by God, the Pope, or Man.

29. so, the anti-catholics were right?
the anti-jfk crowd that were afraid that a catholic prez would take his marching orders from rome were right all along. a catholic politician can't separate his faith from his duty to the people and the common good, or even to the constitution. good. the sooner religion ceases to be carried into the government like so much dog shit on politicians shoes, the better.

31. The Catholics should deny communion to war mongers.
<snip>
In December of 2001, Henry Hyde urged President Bush to make Iraq the next target in the U.S. war on terrorism.
<snip>
He voted in favor of using force against Iraq in October of 2002.
