Witnessing first-hand a small flame's capacity for conflagration, the state Building Code Council yesterday suspended an upcoming ban on apartment-balcony grilling after widespread public outcry against the elimination of a summer pastime.
"We certainly heard from a number of folks about their concerns on the issue," said building council Chairman Stan Price, a Seattle energy consultant. "We wanted as a council to address those issues. The majority of the council felt persuaded to (suspend the ban)."
Count among the persuaders Kingston's Alexander Hepler.
The 43-year-old retired Marine was livid about the proposed ban, which was to take effect across the state on July 1. He's lived in his apartment for four years, and in years prior other apartments throughout the United States. Always, he's has a balcony. Always, he's grilled.
