Edited on Mon Jun-14-04 12:10 AM by alg0912
...during morning rush hour. Car bomb causing many casualties, according to CNN's Jane Arraf.

Link from AP: http://www.kplctv.com/Global/story.asp?S=1937627

Baghdad, Iraq-AP -- A strong explosion has rocked central Baghdad, and police and witnesses say a car bomb has exploded.

Dozens are said to have been wounded.

Remains of a car could be seen scattered along the street on the eastern bank of the Tigris River. Passing motorists shouted "Allahu Akbar," or "God is great" and "Down with the U-S-A."

The blast shattered a building near a bridge leading to the Green Zone headquarters of the coalition authority.

2. I looked at the time and date of this post just to make sure
it wasn't yesterday's news, or the day before's news, or the day before that.

And how many governing council/ministerial Iraquis have been killed? Is it three? I am beginning to lose track.

There is nothing cynical in this post. I don't want to get callous about this.

I just hope President Kerry has some good plans to get us out of this mess.

6. Col. Qadri Abdul-Latif said at least 12 people were killed - MSGOP
Col. Qadri Abdul-Latif said at least 12 people were killed, many of them in shops and a two-story building that were heavily damaged in the blast.

The scene was chaotic, with people trying to pull out victims from the wreckage. Several of them vented their anger at foreign reporters, since many Iraqis blame the Americans for having stirred up violence by their presence.

American troops arrived at the scene and tried to seal off the area.

Three U.S. 1st Cavalry Division soldiers dragged a bystander away from the scene and began beating him with a stick. Iraqi police had to intervene as the crowd screamed in outrage.

American soldiers brandished their weapons to try to restrain the crowd.

7. Overall American casualties are down to 1.64 for June
Obviously, US soldiers are hunkered in behind base walls for the duration of this month, if not longer.

8. Yes - but -
what about the supply lines? It's great to be hunkered down, but dangerous to be surrounded and cut off.

No, that could never happen....could it?

11. ummm, yes it could, read your history of the Mid-East and the end
of the 2nd World War. Double-crossed and violated every promise made. How exactly again did the Brits fare when they tried to control the new country of Iraq? That's right, they had to flee after a very large loss of life..............

Supply lines, that is the least of what we should be worrying about, I just want all our troops home, safe and sound now. Otherwise, I think there is going to be a wholesale slaughter.

13. Supply lines are what the Iraqis have been successful attacking
W/the supposed "turn-over" the end of the month, knowing full well that there will be an increase in attacks, the US military has to make some difficult choices. Certainly, they are not out on patrols maintaining security as much as they had been. They have the Iraqis doing those now, and look what's happening to them.

BTW, five French contractors were killed in the latest blast.

From the updated story:

American troops beat one man with a stick; but after trying in vain to restrain the crowd, the troops and police withdrew from the area.

There is no context here. Why were we beating some dude with a stick?

17. Well, it goes with the territory & position
When a control-freak dictatorial force proves itself to be impotent and helpless, it tends to thrash around blindly.

They are beating that guy in order to further enhance his liberation experience. And because he might know how to raise morale.

From Teasers link:

<snip>The bomb in Baghdad went off as three SUVs carrying the contractors were passing through Tahrir Square in the center of the city. Five other vehicles were also destroyed, as well as nearby shops and a two-story house.

Iraqi civil defense Col. Qadri Abdul-Latif said at least 12 people were killed, many of them in the surrounding buildings.

The attack unleashed fresh anger at the United States.

As bystanders crammed bodies into pickup trucks to rush them to hospitals, a crowd gathered at the scene, shouting "Down with the USA!" and setting fire to an American flag. A group of about 20 young men danced around a charred body.

American troops beat one man with a stick; but after trying in vain to restrain the crowd, the troops and police withdrew from the area.

16. Five Contractors Among 13 Dead in Baghdad Blast: Reuters...
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20040614/wl_nm/iraq_dc&cid=574&ncid=1480

<snip>
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A suicide car bombing in the heart of Baghdad killed at least 13 people on Monday, five of them foreign electricity contractors in a passing convoy.

Two Britons and a Frenchman were among the dead. It was the second suicide bombing in the Iraqi capital in 24 hours and coincided with a wave of assassinations aimed at the new interim government appointed to take over from the U.S.-British occupation authorities on June 30.

Interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said five foreign workers had been killed in the morning rush-hour attack, which devastated a busy street and ripped the front off one building.

"Today's explosion targeted foreign civilians working in the rebuilding of electricity works. Five of them were killed and three were lightly wounded," he told a news conference.
