Yahoo fortifies free e-mail

San Francisco — Internet giant Yahoo Inc. is fortifying its free e-mail service with 25 times more storage and freeing up millions of previously claimed e-mail addresses in an effort to thwart a looming threat from its increasingly disruptive rival Google Inc.


Beginning Tuesday, all of Yahoo's free e-mail accounts will be upgraded to 100 megabytes, a move spurred by Google's plans to offer 1,000 megabytes of free storage through its Gmail service, which has remained in a test phase since early April.


Yahoo has been offering four megabytes of free e-mail storage, although some people with accounts opened several years ago have six megabytes of free storage.

Do I get a 125 mb of storage now? The timing couldn't be more perfect, since I just maxed out my storage today. I'm so lazy I haven't cleaned out my inbox in months.

I wish they would give me something extra for that. I also have a couple of free ones that I use for different lists I belong to, so I will be glad to get the extra storage for those. :-)

It would be stupid for them not to. Why bother paying for the premium account then?

5. It'd be great if they actually got a handle on spam. I receive more

on my Yahoo account than on hotmail. I've been very careful too. Friends have seen the same thing.

6. My yahoo account has been completely spam free

for the 4 years I've had it. I use it with companies I trust. Have you use it with some who might have sold on a mailing list?

plus pop access (which i really like), no graphical ads, etc.
