Anti-American sentiment growing among the Kurds
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/chitribts/20040615/ts_chicagotrib/antiamericansentimentgrowingamongthekurds&cid=2027&ncid=1473

In the days since the UN Security Council passed a resolution governing the restoration of Iraqi sovereignty that has no overt mention of Kurdish concerns, something has been brewing in the streets here that was unheard of just a few weeks ago: anti-American sentiment.

While the Kurds note that they are forever indebted to the U.S. for establishing a no-fly zone in 1991, they also say that the Americans have neglected them.

"We have been betrayed by the Americans," said San Karim Mohammed, 32, a law student. "If America doesn't solve these problems now, I don't know how we are going to make any progress in the future. The Shia are going to turn Iraq (news - web sites) into an Islamist state like Iran."

Iraqi Kurds proudly point out that their army, the pesh merga, fought with the Americans and helped establish a northern front when coalition forces invaded Iraq last year. They also point out that they have long suffered--from being refused nationhood by the British in the 1920s to seeing thousands killed by chemical weapons at Halabja.

3. Does anyone think the U.S. really cares about the Kurds?
The Bu$h administration could care less about the Kurds or their fate. They only want to be friends when it is convenient (such as needing military support), but now that the "Mission is Accomplished", they really don't care. Besides, by giving direct support to the Kurds in Iraq, we would be encouraging the Kurds in Turkey to rise up and join their brothers in Iraq in demanding a Krudish state. And we can't upset our moderate Turkish friends in the Middle East. Self determination? I guess politics and power trumps everything. Oh, wait, I forgot that we live in Bizarro America...

5. So long as the Kurds are useful, there will be the facade of caring
When that usefulness runs out (it may have already), they'll be fucked over yet again in a heartbeat.
