He lost it long ago; it's just that nobody bothered to report it. Even now, they're tip-toeing around the obvious.

Example: During one the debates, one member of the audience asked what each candidate had to offer her and other single people, whom she felt were being left out of the whole tax cut bonanza. Gore answered clearly, explaining how his tax packages and government programs would also help single people. AWOL started babbling about taxes, then jumped to something about single people benefitting from a strong military, and then wandered off on his plans to build up the military that Clinton had supposedly decimated. It was an utterly baffling and disturbing perfomance, but in the end the talking heads all said he'd won because Al Gore was too icky poo or something.
