Bush makes Pakistan "major non-NATO ally"
Seems the GOP have not changed since the 50's and still like to upset India - as they add Pakistan to the major non-NATO allies club, joining Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, New Zealand, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand - letting them get the membership goodies of priority delivery of defense material and the purchase of depleted uranium anti-tank rounds, via a US government loan guarantee program, which backs up loans issued by private banks to finance arms exports.

Bush makes Pakistan "major non-NATO ally"

MACDILL AIR FORCE BASE, United States (AFP) - US President George W. Bush rewarded Pakistan with "major non-NATO ally" status, tightening military cooperation as both countries jointly battle terrorism.

"I hereby designate the Islamic Republic of Pakistan as a major non-NATO ally of the United States for the purposes of the act and the Arms Export Control Act," Bush said in a statement released by the White House.

The decision, announced as the president made a rally-the-troops speech on Iraq here, means Pakistan is joining an exclusive club of countries that enjoy a privileged security relationship with the United States.

The announcement came despite US concerns about nuclear proliferation by the father of Pakistan's atomic program, Abdul Qadeer Khan, and followed a finding by the official probe into the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that Islamabad had helped Afghanistan Taliban regime shelter Osama bin Laden.<snip>

The country is filled with Madrassas that are very anti-American, and Musharraf is himself skating on thin ice. From my recollection, there were three assasination attempts. The problem with this countries is the fact that we need to stop supporting the opressive regims and insist on reforms...Not holding my breath waiting for this to happen.

3. Is this possibly as irrational and bizarre as going after Iraq rather than
possibly any number of countries which possibly aided/abetted al Qaeda in the attacks of 9-11?

8. And why not? They really came thru for Bush on 9/11.
Daniel Ellsberg, yesterday:

"...it seems to me quite plausible that --plausible, that's all I'd say-- that Pakistan was quite involved in this (9/11), and that many Saudis were well informed on this," says Ellsberg.

"And to say that. To say Pakistan-- is to me, to say CIA Because I think the relations between the Pakistan ISI and CIA were very close from the beginning. And it's hard to say that the ISI knew something that the CIA had no knowledge of."

14. Why not? I mean only the WHOLE WORLD is getting nukes from them.
Its funny how Pakistan seems to be selling nukes to any and all takers while Saddam didn't have a single nuke to speak of and we invade Iraq and make Pakistan our ally.
