Suspect in Mall Plot Sent for Evaluation

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A federal magistrate on Wednesday ordered a man charged with plotting to blow up a shopping mall to be transferred to a federal psychiatric facility to determine if he is mentally competent.

The evidence Magistrate Mark Abel used to determine why Nuradin Abdi should be sent to the facility was not disclosed publicly. Authorities have accused Abdi, 32, of plotting to blow up a mall with admitted al-Qaida member Iyman Faris, who is now imprisoned for never-acted-on plans to sabotage the Brooklyn Bridge.

The indictment against Abdi, a Somali national, was unsealed Monday. The FBI (news - web sites) said no specific mall was targeted.

Authorities have a third suspect under surveillance and are trying to determine how many others might have been involved, U.S. Attorney Gregory Lockhart said earlier.

"I don't know that we know at this point know who all the people he (Abdi) was associated with are," Lockhart said.

ps. As I've been requesting for 3 years, a law change, for all Government leaders be subject to psychiatric evalutions, drug and alcohol testing just as they make all 'normal' people with Top Secret clearances. Why should our leaders who have the authority to launch nuclear weapons and conventional wars NOT be tested?

pss. I posted the story before I read it all. Remember that guy who in S. Dakota? said 'Burning Bush' and the bar tender turned him in to the Secret Service and he's been convicted and serving years? I think if that guy was black or Arabic or dark skinned and/or Muslim the Feds would have blown it into a terrorists bombing too. Going back and talk to everyone he'd ever spoken to and parse together his words for a case. Since I've been back in the USA, in public, I've heard people say, 'I'm going to kill you' more than a hundred times. I think mostly parents speaking to their children.

then six months in prison and who knows what "persuasion" that the Bush gang have used on him made him confess to a plot he had absolutely no way of carrying out would make him that way. This guy had no organization, no access to any types of explosives, no nothing.

I think it may be a shining example of why using any sort of stress to get people to divulgs information doesn't work. They'll come up with any kind of lunatic story their tormentors will buy, just to get it to stop.

The psych evaluation should be fascinating.
