Calif. senators press Bush, FERC on energy issues

Posted on Wed, Jun. 16, 2004

ERICA WERNER

Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer released angry letters to President Bush and federal energy regulators Wednesday, urging them to agree immediately to California's demands for billions in refunds from the state's 2000-01 energy crisis.

The Democrats cited new transcripts of Enron Corp. traders gloating and swapping profanities as they discussed cheating California on energy sales.

"We have now seen proof that is irrefutable that we were essentially robbed," Boxer told a press conference.

She released a letter to Bush asking him to seek the resignation of any member of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission who doesn't agree California should receive refunds of $8.9 billion for overcharges.

1. What about the FERC order to have Calif. pay Enron?
That's right, Calif. is supposed to pay the criminals money back. When Diane and Barb get this, they will really go nuts. And why is Ken Lay still not even indicted? He should be doing 30 years by now.

2. Here is what Feinstein said
"To ask Californians to repay energy companies $270 million after the fraud perpetrated against them is preposterous," Feinstein said in a statement. "Californians lost billions during the 2000-2001 energy crisis while energy traders mocked them. California consumers are the ones who deserve some relief."

That was the administration's response to our Senators' complaints.

6. I watched Washington State representatives on the House floor on CSPAN
Just the other day. It was disheartening to see them essentially speaking to empty chairs. They were Dems, of course. They were reading excerpts from the tape transcripts, they were recounting tales of untold hardship brought by the Enron rape and pillage to their constituents -- and they were virtually alone.

They quoted some SOB who had said that the wonderful thing about the Enron debacle was that it showed how WELL the system works! Because the lights stayed on and nobody was really hurt! Wow!

The finest aluminum plant anywhere (the representatives said) closed permanently and the pieces are now being sold off; 700 plant workers are out of a job. School children were told to wear extra sweaters and jackets to schools where only every third ceiling light was turned on. Schools had to keep their decade-old textbooks in use to pay their energy bills.

They went on and on, but no one's listening in the Republican-controlled House. Demands for investigations are ignored.

I don't know how any of the people responsible can sleep at night, but I guess if you have no heart and no soul it must not present a problem.

7. And the rethugs in the House
are gearing up to force drilling in the Arctic Refuge again by tying it to another piece of legislation. What a bunch of bullshit.
