http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/GEO733514.htmBAGHDAD, June 17 (Reuters) - New Iraqi army recruits were eagerly waiting for their names to be called out when a suicide bombing sent hot shrapnel flying in all directions.
The blast killed 35 people outside an Iraqi military base in Baghdad on Thursday and hurt efforts to recruit Iraqis willing to risk their lives in a country where members of the new army, police and security forces are high on a guerrilla hit list.
"I was standing there waiting for the army officer to call out my name. I heard my salary would be 600,000 dinars (about $430) a month. I needed a job," said Ibrahim Ismail, who was being treated in hospital.
"Then suddenly there was huge explosion. Ten or 15 others were on top of me on the street. I can't go back. No way."
