Report: Cardinal Law Testified in Court

Thursday June 17, 2004 4:46 PM

Guardian snip

BOSTON (AP) - Roman Catholic Cardinal Bernard F. Law made a rare appearance before a grand jury, testifying about a priest who was transferred despite accusations of sexual misconduct, according to a report published Thursday.

The Boston Globe said Law, who stepped down as Boston's archbishop in 2002, testified before the federal grand jury in Boston for three hours on June 8.

The grand jury investigation involves the case of Rev. William J. Scanlan, 58, who was transferred by Boston Archdiocese officials to a medical facility in Palo Alto, Calif., where he became a military chaplain in 1998.

It was unclear whom the grand jury was investigating, but Law's personal attorney, J. Owen Todd, told The Associated Press that the cardinal is not the target of a criminal investigation.
