NATO force with 3,000 British troops to go to Iraq: report
Sat Jun 19, 6:07 AM ET

LONDON (AFP) - London and Washington are drawing up a plan to send a NATO (news - web sites) force including up to 3,000 British troops to Iraq (news - web sites) to support the interim Iraqi government as it takes over power.

The Guardian newspaper said Saturday that the troops would be "temporarily extracted" from NATO and labelled a British-led international force to make it more politically acceptable to members of the alliance -- notably France and Germany -- that were opposed to the war.

The force would come from NATO's Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, based in Germany under the command of a British general, Richard Dannatt, reinforced by a British battle group, the newspaper said.

About 60 percent of the corps are British, it added.

1. Unfortunately this will be called a Big Win for Bush and distorted by the
Media and Repugs as "Bush Gets Approval from UN for Nato to Send in More Troops!" Most folks won't read it as another Bush lie, they will think he's strong, decisive and has defeated Germany and France by getting Nato in. Tony Blair and Bush...joined in world mayhem...:-(

2. What a pile of crap, the headline is misleading but what else is new
I hope NATO comes out clear and loud that this is NOT a NATO action. The British are pulling their 3000 troops OUT of NATO in order to insert them into Iraq. I hope the British people who are strongly against sending any more troops to Iraq scream out loud too.

3. Exactly.
By the same definition, one could call the American forces there "NATO forces."

Horseshit.
