U.S. troops capture Saddam bodyguard
Well they have his chef, his gardener, his valet. So I suppose this natural progression is expected.

Aug. 12, 2003 | TIKRIT, Iraq (AP) --

U.S. soldiers on Tuesday captured one of Saddam Hussein's former bodyguards and an Iraqi general who was a senior Baath Party official, the U.S. military said.

The total 14 suspects arrested in a sweep outside Saddam's hometown of Tikrit belonged to a single family that had been a key backer of the deposed dictator's regime -- and was believed to be supporting guerrilla resistance to U.S. occupying forces.

In the latest violence against American troops, a soldier was killed Tuesday when roadside bombs blasted a U.S. convoy west of the capital, Baghdad.

The series of raids lasted three hours, said Lt. Col. Steve Russell, commander of the 22nd Infantry Regiment's 1st Battalion. He declined to identify the detainees or specify the location of the raid other than as a southern Tikrit suburb.

1. Note--ONE of his FORMER guards
Would have failed headline writing in j-school with that sort of sloppiness (which only indicates it isn't sloppiness, but intentional!)

4. heard it on the news
driving back to work starting with his body guard, next described as his former body guard, then being one of the top 55 individuals being hunted, then not one of the members of the idiotic deck of cards. So listening carefully leads one to believe that sometime in the past this individual served as body guard but is not actually wanted nor was he being hunted but they arrested him anyway. So now I am dizzy with all this spin and completely unprofessional journalism.

2. this story is just meant to bury the story of US casualties
whenever we take losses some story comes out about "US troops nabbing loyalists" or whatever.

3. oboy, more bottom-level meaningless captures
why, o mighty media, would we give a rat's ass about Saddam's bodyguards? Did they train the 9/11 pilots? Did they do anything except stand in front of Saddam to protect him?

We've lost 300 soldiers for THIS????

6. So for today's Elvis sighting.
We have another bodyguard. Christ, he must have had at least a few 1000 of those in his lifetime. Odds are that at least half of them managed to survive the experience.
