South Korean Held in Iraq Pleads for Life
Edited on Sun Jun-20-04 05:42 PM by Tripper11
BAGHDAD, Iraq - The Arab satellite TV network Al-Jazeera aired a videotape Sunday purportedly from al-Qaida linked militants showing a South Korean hostage begging for his life and pleading with his government to withdraw troops from Iraq (news - web sites).

The kidnappers, who identified themselves as belonging to a group led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, gave South Korea (news - web sites) 24 hours to meet its demand or "we will send you the head of this Korean."

"Korean soldiers, please get out of here," the man screamed in English, flailing his arms. "I don't want to die. I don't want to die. I know that your life is important, but my life is important."

South Korean media identified the hostage as Kim Sun-il, 33, an employee of South Korea's Gana General Trading, Co., a supplier for the U.S. military. TV news station YTN said he was captured in the Fallujah area.

1. This guy is a merc.

I reserve pity for soldiers, not mercenaries. This guy knew the risks when he decided to become an enabler for an illegal occupation.

I hope the Iraqis show more mercy to this South Korean than we do to the local civilians.

4. He probably spoke in English because his captors don't speak Korean.

Some Koreans do speak English, however.

5. True... But If The Plea Was Designed For Koreans To Hear...
to create pressure in Korea for the government to withdraw its troops from Iraq, and...

it's a Korean making a plea for his very life, you'd think he'd speak in his native tongue.

No???

english speaking occupants I would make a plea in english too...He knows, the terrorists know, we know that the case of the S.Korean support to the occupation is decided first in Washington then in Seoul. And the target of the terrorising message is not only the korean team but all the foreigners working there.
