BAGHDAD (AFP) - A military judge said the defence team of a US soldier accused of abusing Iraqi prisoners will be allowed to interview the head of US-led forces in Iraq (news - web sites) and ordered that Abu Ghraib prison where the alleged outrages took place should remain open.

Pre-trial hearings started earlier for Sergeant Javal Davis, Staff Sergeant Ivan Frederick and Corporal Charles Graner, who face a litany of charges such as punching and stamping on detainees and forcing them to simulate sexual acts.

The three, who are among seven junior ranking soldiers charged in the outrage, will face courts martial at a later date after the hearings, which are due to run for three days.

Military judge Colonel James Pohl granted Davis' defence lawyers permission to interview Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez and other senior officials before reporting back to him by July 31.
