Ex-wife of GOP Senate candidate alleged sex club forays
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/06/22/ryan.divorce/index.html

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) -- The ex-wife of Jack Ryan, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Illinois, alleged in court papers filed in 2000 that he took her to sex clubs and asked her to engage in sexual activity in front of other patrons.
<snip>
"It was a bizarre club with cages, whips and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling," she said in the court document, adding that her husband "wanted me to have sex with him there, with another couple watching. I refused."

She said on arriving at the third club, in Paris, "people were having sex everywhere. I cried. I was physically ill. became very upset with me and said it was not a 'turn on' for me to cry."

6. But he promoted himself as Mr. Family Values
And stabbed his other republicans as too liberal, not moral enough.

my favorite quote:
"He also declined to discuss his current personal life but struck a note of contrition when asked about other accusations in the court documents that he was overly critical and controlling of Jeri Ryan when they were married.

"There's lots of things I could have done better, and I think about them all the time," Ryan said."

I'll bet he thinks about them all the time. I just wonder what he has saved on his hard drive. That would make a great topic of discussion.

he's running for Fitzgerald's senate seat. He's up against Barak Obama. On the surface Ryan looked like a shoe in. Pretty Frat boy looks, some said slick campaign ads (I disagree), and MONEY. He refused to answer questions about his divorce and didn't want any of the court records made public, iirc. Seems like that bit him in the a$$.

Edited on Tue Jun-22-04 08:25 AM by tandot
"Ryan said he believes voters will not hold the allegations against him.

"I think that when voters look into their hearts and minds and say, 'Can we trust this fellow Jack Ryan, or does he try to do the best he can, or is he in this job for the right reasons?' I think they'll see that same sincerity to try do the right thing, though knowing that in the end that I am human and I do fail."

Republicans, of course, feel the same way about what Clinton did. He was human and failed...but we forgive him for that...yeah right!

39. He's not a sitting Senator. He's running for Fitzgerald's open seat.
Obama was already ahead by 18% (I believe) statewide. If poster-boy drops out, though, the repukes will try to convince ex-governor Jim Edgar to run against Obama. Edgar has a heart problem, but always presented himself as very honest and moderate, and people bought it, so he's still pretty popular. He's now the head of the Bush organization in Illinois.

Waiting for the next installment.

57. Actually (and unfortunately), it depends on the whim of the judges.
We've had two recent high profile cases along these lines concerning U.S. Senate races. In New Jersey, the state Supreme Court disregarded a perfectly clear law and allowed the Lautenberg for Torricelli switch. This was purely and simply a partisan favor for the New Jersey Democratic Party.

In Minnesota, the state Democrats sought an accommodation on absentee ballots due to Paul Wellstone's untimely death. In that case, despite the obvious mitigating circumstances underlying the request, the state Supreme Court upheld the strict language of the law.

IMHO, courts should stick to the law in such cases. The Minnesota Supreme Court acted properly. The New Jersey Supreme Court acted corruptly. I don't think the fact that a Republican might be involved this time makes any difference -- the courts should follow the law.

It is really disgusting the way members of the "family values" Party are rationalizing this story. They are trying to make it sound as though it's Jeri Ryan’s fault he tried to take her to those clubs. Jim Edgar smirked about Jack!'s "Hollywood marriage." No, I'm sorry guys, it was a "North Shore Republican marriage," and it's not the fault of Hollywood or the French that Jack! is a big ol' exhibitionist and god knows what else..

Don Wade and his pretend liberal wife Roma are falling all over themselves on their radio program trying to say how this was okay. "No infidelity on the part of Mr. Ryan." "Clinton's sex with intern was worse". "Ryan was hiding this ONLY to protect his son". "BLAH HYPOCRISY BLAH BULLSHIT BLAH FAMILY VALUES OUT THE WINDOW BLAH BLAH BLAH". These fucking repugs make me sick. First they spend dozens of millions of dollars studying Pres. Clinton's dick because of "family values", then they suddenly don't care when it's one of their own. Don't get me wrong, I could care less what Ryan did. That's between him and his wife. But if you're gonna be in a political party that "supposedly" won't put up with this behavior then you have suffer the consequences.

53. Nasty precedent here.
I agree this probably kills whatever slim chance Jack Ryan had of winning, but let's be careful about doing a scalp dance before we think this through. Both Jack and Jeri Ryan wanted their divorce records sealed. The newspapers had a different agenda and sued for their release. A judge agreed, based on "the public's right to know."

Sheesh, folks, do we really want to do this to political candidates as a rountine matter of course? Forget whether there is an R or a D after the name. Privacy cuts both ways.

A lot of people here are still obsessed with Bill Clinton's sexual misadventures and the publicity accorded them, so let's use that as a baseline analysis. Remember that Monica Lewinsky surfaced as a witness in the Paula Jones lawsuit. Ken Starr was not involved until later; Paula was being represented by a couple of contingency fee hustlers -- i.e., the kind of lawyers most people here think are national treasures who must, above all, be protected against tort reform.

The fireworks arose from the effort to block her testimony and, when that didn't work, to impeach the lurid confidences she had inadvertently allowed Linda Tripp to tape. This put BC in the position of denying a sexual entanglement (ultimately on the grounds that she touched him but he didn't touch her, at least not with intent to gratify), and the rest is history. The media predictably focused on salacious sexual details, but the serious issues were alleged witness tampering and perjury in a civil lawsuit which, let us not forget, Paula Jones ultimately won.

I'm not going to reargue the Lewinsky affair, but I would simply note that anyone who is troubled at all by the privacy issues there should certainly agree that the privacy issues in the Ryan case are open and shut. A judge has made a serious mistake. The first result is that a Republican who wasn't going to win anyhow has been embarrassed, but the second and much more important result is that another nail has been driven into the idea that a public person retains any privacy rights at all.

I don't suggest this is an easy line to draw. If Jack was beating his wife or abusing his kids, IMO that is fair game. But a slightly kinky sexual appetite -- and with his own wife? I can understand Christian Coalition types wanting this kind of thing open for public scrutiny, but it's a little surprising that no one here seems concerned with the implications.

54. What does California law say?
Court records are public records in many states. If California law dictates that divorce records are public records, then the judge made the right decision. If California law dictates that divorce records are not public records, then the judge made the wrong decision.

55. I don't know.
It's a good question. I have the notion that family court records, even if not sealed automatically, are sealed routinely if the parties request it. One also often reads of civil suits being settled with the stipulation that the records are sealed and neither party will discuss the case. The key in such instances is that both parties agree.

Criminal cases are different in that the State is the plaintiff. A criminal case is thus, by definition, a public matter. Civil cases (including divorces) are first and foremost private disputes.

Any California lawyers lurking about?

56. While I care not in the slightest what consenting adults do...
the hypocrisy of condemning alternative lifestyles and spouting family values blather at the same time one is engaging in alternative lifestyles is sickening.

I have no problem with Jack Ryan's proclivities - hell, I share most of them, although I wouldn't take a partner who wasn't interested in participating a second time - but I have a hell of a problem with lying and hypocrisy. If you yourself are part of the leather community, you should sure as hell be speaking up for the other members of that community, not piously condemning their actions on Monday and partying with them on Saturday.

I hate hypocrites worse than poison. I hate seeing anyone's private sex life made fodder for the tabloid media - it isn't anyone else's business - but I truly, truly hate people who are what they publicly condemn (Rush, are you listening?).
