The South Korean government has admitted it is in talks with Jama'at al-Tawhid and Jihad who are holding a South Korean man, Kim Sun-il in Iraq and threatening to behead him unless Seoul pulls troops out of the country and cancels further planned deployments.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was trying to negotiate Sun-il’s release and the Iraqi resistance group have agreed to extend the deadline to give more time for talks on his fate.
Kim, an Arabic speaker and evangelical Christian who has worked in Iraq for a year as a translator for a Korean firm supplying goods to the U.S. army was seized on June 17 in Fallujah, Sunday, Al-Jazeera aired a tape that showed Kim Sun-il was shown pleading for his life.
South Korea said Tuesday it will evacuate all of its nationals doing business in Iraq as the country however the Korean government continues to say in public at least that they will not abandon their plans to send 3,000 troops to the northern Iraqi city of Irbil, Six hundred South Korean military medics and engineers are currently in southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah and should the deployment go ahead, would make South Korea the biggest coalition partner to the United States after Britain.
