WASHINGTON, June 22 (UPI) -- The FBI needs to expand its cooperation with other nations' security and intelligence agencies and aims to bring to the United States officials from some services notorious for torture to work jointly with the bureau, its director, Robert S. Mueller III, said Tuesday.
"We need to bring people from other countries to work with us here jointly, whether it be from Indonesia or Pakistan or Saudi Arabia or elsewhere," he told the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, D.C.
All three countries have internal security agencies that are alleged to use torture and detention without trial, according to human-rights groups.
Mueller also described an incident where an e-mail threat to bomb the New York subway was determined to originate from Russia. "We asked the federal security service, the internal (affairs) ministry to investigate the credibility of the threat, and with their help we were able to resolve that particular threat," he said.
