Davis cranks out judicial appointments since recall election certified

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Gov. Gray Davis, after months without filling a single judicial vacancy, began churning out appointments the day the election to recall him was certified, state records show.

Davis has appointed 15 judges since July 23, the day the secretary of state announced the recall question would go to voters. The appointments, along with one other made two days before the special election became official, were the governor's first since April 3.

Davis, a Democrat, named another three judges Tuesday, a prelude to what legal experts speculate is the governor's drive to fill all remaining judicial vacancies before the Oct. 7 recall vote.

There are currently more 48 vacancies on the state's 1,600-member bench, a number that is not unusually high. But Gerald Uelmen, a Santa Clara University School of Law scholar, said filling judicial vacancies is common among governors ahead of elections, and expects all of California's judgeships to be occupied soon.

``It's a standard practice,'' Uelmen said. ``Every outgoing governor attempts to achieve that, even if this departure is somewhat premature.'' (snip/...)

A paniced, soon-to-be ex-gov is giving away judgeships like they were ice cream in July. That is an image voters really like to see.

14. This is what every governor does, Republicans too

According to the articles, every governor does this toward the end of his or her term. This is historically the way things work and it is done by both parties through history always.

Just because Bush likes to take two month vacations every few months, even while Americans are dying and losing their jobs, doesn't mean that Democrats have to to the same.

Davis was elected by the people of California to fill those courts and he is doing his job.

If he didn't do it, you'd be posting here about how Davis is leaving the courts empty instead of filling them.

and let the new governor, possibly one who calls himself "the Terminator" fill all the vacancies himself with appointees who have the approval of certain Republican insiders who think they have a dog in this race and want to do everything they can to influence the outcome of this (laughingly called) election?

Why don't you think Issa isn't running himself after putting up his own money for the recall? The White House put pressure on him to step down. Issa stood there and blubbered into the microphone, tearfully bidding his farwell. It was all his own idea, NOT.

The Bushies think they have an opportunity to get CA's electoral votes in the 2004 election if they get a Republican governor elected but that's not guaranteed.

So I say, you GO Governor Davis! Fill up those courts!
