Governor plans to serve rest of term, heal pain in family
Gov. Bob Wise announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election, and will instead focus on governing the state and “healing the pain I caused my family.”
Wise said his extramarital affair, which he admitted three months ago, was the “precipitating event” that led to his decision not to run again — not because it hurt his chances for re-election, but because it revealed the tattered relationships he had with his wife, Sandy, and two children.
“What you have to do is be real careful, and I wasn’t,” he said. “I’ve done an incredibly painful self-examination, and I can see where I started to make mistakes.
"In public life, what you have to be very careful about is that you preserve a balance, that there are some events that you’re going to have to say, no, I can’t make it, I have to be with my family. ... You get past a few months and realize you weren’t there for anything for your family.”
