Wise not running for re-election (WV Governor)
Governor plans to serve rest of term, heal pain in family

Gov. Bob Wise announced Tuesday that he will not seek re-election, and will instead focus on governing the state and “healing the pain I caused my family.”

Wise said his extramarital affair, which he admitted three months ago, was the “precipitating event” that led to his decision not to run again — not because it hurt his chances for re-election, but because it revealed the tattered relationships he had with his wife, Sandy, and two children.

“What you have to do is be real careful, and I wasn’t,” he said. “I’ve done an incredibly painful self-examination, and I can see where I started to make mistakes.

"In public life, what you have to be very careful about is that you preserve a balance, that there are some events that you’re going to have to say, no, I can’t make it, I have to be with my family. ... You get past a few months and realize you weren’t there for anything for your family.”

2. Thats too bad, wonder
if he will run for Senate when Byrd retires. What are the prospects of holding on to this one, West Virginia will be a major battleground state in 2004 and the Dems have to win it this time. A pickup here with NH and another state (Arizona, Nevada, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennesee, Missouri, etc) would really screw up rove's Florida plan, it would no longer matter.
