Congress endorses Bush pledge to Sharon

US House of Representatives approves assurances to Israel, including recognition of settlement blocks and rejection of Palestinian right of return.

The US Congress has approved the letter of assurances given to PM Ariel Sharon by US President George Bush regarding a future permanent settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

The letter, given to Sharon in his meeting with Bush at the White House on April 14, was provided in return for pledges made by Sharon to Bush. The US letter was highlighted by American agreement to leave settlement blocks in Judea in Samaria in Israeli hands in any future peace deal and a rejection of the Palestinian refugees' right of return to Israel.

The decision to approve the assurances was made by a huge margin, 407 supports compared to only nine who voted against. Three congressmen abstained while another 14 were absent. Following the vote, Congress Majority leader Tom DeLay stressed that Israel now does not have to withdraw to 1949 border and that right of return is non-existent.

5. US at odds with the whole world and US public

Every single country in the world views Israel as the agressor. Even the US public knows the US does not act fairly in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The US congress is the most pro-Israel-expansionist institution in the world. What a bunch of creeps.

This vote endorses ethnic cleansing.

And there's not a thing we can do about it. If you try to point out the obvious, you will be dismissed and shouted down.

I'm not so sure of that. Why does the public keep elected Congressmen and Senators who are at odds with their wishes? :shrug:

Generally the public knows that the US is biased towards Israel.
I don't have any polls that I can quote right now, since the polls were taken some time ago. But generally the public knows that the US is biased towards Israel.

These polls suprise people who follow the situation closely. The drumbeat against the Palestinians is amost constant. For example, most US citizens would not know that over 3 times more Palestinians than Israelis have been killed in the conflict.

I think Israel is not that important an issue for most people. And they probably don't put the blame for the US bias on their local represenatives. So they vote them in.
