TIKRIT, Iraq - U.S. troops identified Saddam Hussein loyalists in custody Wednesday as two key members of the ousted dictator's Republican Guard and a paymaster for his Fedayeen Saddam militia.

The U.S. military Wednesday said two American soldiers were killed in guerrilla bomb attacks during the past 24 hours.

In an attack Wednesday morning, one soldier was killed and another was wounded when their convoy hit a roadside bomb 15 miles south of Saddam's hometown of Tikrit, the military reported. The soldiers were in an armored personnel carrier in a four-vehicle convoy, Maj. Josslyn Aberle, spokeswoman for the 4th Infantry Division, said.

Also Wednesday the military reported a soldier killed and two wounded in a bomb attack near Taji the day before. The military press office had no other details, but the deaths were in the same region where there was a big oil pipeline fire Tuesday and at about the same time.

The deaths brought to 60 the number of U.S. troops killed in action since May 1, when President Bush declared major combat over.

1. Read It & Weep.
The second sentance should be the lead sentance: two more Americans killed.

And when will the Bush media stop calling the attackers SADDAM LOYALISTS?!

Why do I think the attackers are just good ol Iraqis who want America out of their land?

2. A group of 'bring-'em-home!' parents of troops ...
was on C-SPAN a moment ago. One mom reported her
son sez thirty to forty 'major incidents' occur over
there each day. Ouch.

5. Total (so far) for 8/12 and 8/13
Edited on Wed Aug-13-03 10:16 AM by markses
Three KIA. The datelines are helpful, but in this case, the article is summary. These reflect the CENTCOM announcements for 8/12 and 8/13: 1 KIA in Ramadi (10 am, 8/12), 1 KIA in al Taji (6:15 pm, 8/12), 1 KIA in ad Dwar south of Tikrit (6:30 am 8/13).

On edit: God, I sound like a machine doing minor acccounting for widgets. My apologies. These abstract "KIA's" are, of course, people - people who had no need to even be in such a dangerous situation, if not for the rank lies of the mis-administration. My heart goes out to the families, and to all families, of US military, Iraqi military, and Iraqi civilians who have lost loved ones in this unnecessary slaughter.

7. What is confusing is that as of August 12, 2003, 8:53 PM 57 had died...
...from combat but today it is 60? I don't understand this any more?

6. watch Bush create a new category to exclude the soldiers killed by bombs
to lower the number.
